An Escambia County High School teacher has been placed on leave of absence because of an allegation of having sex with a student while a teacher at Leflore High School, according to reports.

Zachary Calhoun, a math teacher at ECHS and former teacher at Leflore High School, was arrested early Tuesday morning after a Mobile County Grand Jury handed down an indictment.

“The employee was placed on leave of absence as soon as we were made aware of the allegations and indictment,” Escambia County Schools Superintendent Michele McClung said in a statement. “Additionally, we notified the Alabama State Department of Education of the allegations and his leave of absence.”

According to reports, Calhoun was booked into Mobile’s Metro County Jail at approximately 6:30 a.m., and bonded out on a $27,500 bond on Tuesday. Reports indicate that he was also charged with two counts of school employee engaging in a sex act with a student and sexual abuse I.
