Four students in Escambia County’s school system were honored Thursday during the regular meeting of the Escambia County School Board.

This year marks the second year that students have been invited to participate in the annual Superintendent’s Christmas Card Contest. Winning artwork was selected and transformed into official Christmas cards to be mailed out during the holiday season.

Superintendent Michele McClung made the announcement of the winners and presented each with their framed artwork and a card using their transformed art.

In the division, the contest winner was Taylor Coleman, a fifth grade student at Flomaton Elementary.

Middle school winner was Cecelia Lovold, a seventh grade student at Escambia County Middle School.

The high school division winner was Jakayla Bullard, a tenth grade student at Escambia County High School.

The Superintendent’s Choice Award went to Harlee Wilson, a senior at W.S. Neal High School.

Also during last weeks meeting, the Board:

• approved the renewal of the appointment of Brox Garrett as the Board Attorney for Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2023 with a $1,000 retainer fee in place;

• Heard financial reports, facility reports and school updates from around the district;

• approved the following personnel recommendations:

Resignations: David Ballanger, math teacher at Escambia County High School, effective Dec. 15;

Matthew Mize, Agri-science teacher at Escambia County High School, effective Jan. 3, 2023;

Shemika Barnes, instructional teacher aide at Escambia County Middle School, effective Jan. 2;

Russell Robinson, special education teacher at Escambia County Middle School, effective Dec. 15;

Robert Shipp, 7-hour lunchroom worker at Rachel Patterson Elementary School, effective Dec. 8;

April Monk, bus driver, Brewton bush shop, effective Nov. 1

Employment: Rehires – Raven Ates, elementary teacher at Rachel Patterson Elementary School effective Jan. 3 replacing Sandra Forbes;

Rebecca Jones, 7-hour lunchroom worker at Rachel Patterson Elementary School effective Jan. 3, replacing Robert Shipp;

Julie Rowland, instructional teacher aide at Rachel Patterson Elementary School effective Jan. 3 replacing Stephanie Mosley;

Jennifer Lee, English/Language Arts teacher at W.S. Neal Middle School effective Jan. 3 replacing Meagan Barragan;

Hannah Bryant, Speech Language Pathologist, office of Special Education and Student Services, effective Jan. 3, replacing Jacob Middleton;

Contracts: Approval to enter into TEAMS contract with Daphne Sullivan, math teacher at Escambia County Middle School.
