The storm with straight-line winds that injured six on March 18 topped The Atmore Advance’s Top 10 stories of 2022.

The Top 10 stories were voted on via a poll on the newspaper’s website. The nominations were based on reader interaction with the site.

In the top story, the straight-line winds swept through the Big Oak Mobile Home Park. Numerous mobile homes overturned, and one trailer was completely flipped over.

After the storm hit, multiple agencies responded, including the ECSO, the Poarch Creek Indian Tribal Police and Fire Departments, the Atmore Police and Fire Departments, the Alabama State Troopers and more provided aid. Southern Pine crews were one scene restoring power shortly after the storm.

Soon after the storm, neighbors and friends pitched in to help in the clean up effort.

Several of the other top 10 stories had the same number of votes. The following are the stories with the same number of votes listed in order they appear in the poll:

• PCI to build new meat processing facility – The Poarch Creek Indians announced the building of a new meat processing facility.

• Blue Devils win 4A regional – The Escambia County Blue Devils boys varsity basketball team won the Class 4A South Regional in Montgomery in late February. ECHS would then go on to play in the state championship game.

• Blue Devils fall in state title game – The ECHS boys varsity basketball team fell in the Class 4A state title game to Jacksonville. This was the program’s first state championship appearance.

• EA wins state track title – Escambia Academy won the overall state track title in the spring.

• Atmore man arrested for violating domestic violence protection order – An Atmore man was arrested Dec. 2 on violating a domestic violence protection order and criminal trespassing charges, according to the Atmore Police Department. Public Information officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said Ethan Lane, 29, was arrested for the second time in late November.

• ECHS teacher placed on leave of absence for allegation of having sex with student while teacher at Leflore High School – An Escambia County High School teacher was been placed on leave of absence because of an allegation of having sex with a student while a teacher at Leflore High School, according to reports. Zachary Calhoun, a math teacher at ECHS and former teacher at Leflore High School, was arrested early Tuesday morning after a Mobile County Grand Jury handed down an indictment.

• Atmore woman dies in single-vehicle crash – An Atmore woman died in a single-vehicle crash Nov. 20 on Booneville Road, approximately 8 miles northwest of Atmore, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.  Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said in a release that Tara R. Nelson, 46, was fatally injured when the 2015 Kia Cadenza she was driving left the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.

• Atmore woman arrested for making terroristic threat – An Atmore woman was arrested Nov. 10 for making terroristic threats, according to the Atmore Police Department. Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said Whitney Hyatt, 31, of Atmore, was placed under arrest and charged with terroristic threats and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.

• PCI holds Christmas Parade – The Poarch Creek Indians held their annual Christmas Parade Dec. 9 on the reseveration.
