Atmore man arrested on drug, weapon concealment charges

An Atmore man was arrested Dec. 20 on drug and unlawful possession of a concealed weapon charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Layton D. Frye, 19, of Atmore, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana I and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said the arrest stemmed after an APD officer observed a vehicle being operated with only one headlight.

McMann said the officer stopped the vehicle and contacted Frye, who was the driver.

“Upon contacting Frye, the officer could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” McMann said. “The officer asked Frye if he had any marijuana in the vehicle and Frye removed a bag from the console containing 10 grams of marijuana.”

McMann said the officer removed Frye in order to detain him and to search the vehicle.

“During the search, the officer recovered a 9 millimeter handgun under the driver’s seat. The officer also found a digital scale, a small amount of methamphetamine and several small plastic baggies typically used in the sale of marijuana and other narcotics.”

Frye was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
