The Atmore City Council adopted a proclamation Monday honoring the life of Vangela McPherson Franklin during its regular meeting.

The proclamation named the swimming pool at Houston Avery Park “The V.J. Franklin Community Pool.”
Municipal Judge and County Commissioner Kaurean Reynolds said Franklin spent countless hours at the park, and provided all sorts of mentorship services to the city.

“I can personally attest to the work she put into that pool,” Reynolds said. “On behalf of the commission, I’m going to sponsor a nice sized sign for the pool.”

In other business, the city:

• adopted resolution 2023-03, authorizing Mayor Jim Staff to renew the current line of credit with First National Bank and Trust at a 6 percent rate for one year;
• approved an airport supplemental agreement (No. 7), which is an agreement between the city of Atmore and Volkert Inc., where Volkert provides all necessary professional services associated with improvements to the Atmore Municipal Airport on the construction of the six-unit rectangular hangar. City Clerk Becca Smith said the agreement is a part of a grant that already has been approved;
• approved a grass and weed abatement cost report. Greg Vaughn, an officer with the building an zoning department, said the report is a summary for 10 properties that were abated of the grass and weed nuisance. The approximate cost for each property is $450, Vaughn said. Vaughn said the cost report will be sent to the county, and a tax lien will be placed on each of the properties listed in the report;
• recognized Charlotte Boyle, who provided a statement of support for the Guard and Reserve. Boyle said the statement indicates that if you are an employer and you have a guard or reserve, they’ll given back their job or one of equal opportunity after a tour of service;
• approved the second annual There is Love in the Park at Houston Avery Park on April 15, from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The event is a free event for the community to be held to share the love of Jesus Christ. The event is being held by the Standing in the Gap Ministry; and,
• approved Main Street Atmore’s Shamrock Shuffle 5K event, which will be held on Sat., March 18, at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers will begin at Heritage Park and end at Boxcar Willie.
