Atmore man charged with sex abuse

An Atmore man was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton Jan. 26 on sex abuse charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Public Information Officer and Investigator Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Vonsha Jones, 28, of Atmore, has been charged with sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, sodomy I and sexual abuse I.

McMann said on Nov. 30, 2022, an APD investigator was contacted by an Alabama Department of Human Resources caseworker.

McMann said the caseworker was investigating a complaint from a child that had recently disclosed memories of sexual abuse and now lived in the Atmore area.

“The Child Advocacy Center interviewed the victim several weeks later, and discovered the abuse began when the victim was under 12 years of age and occurred over a three-year period,” McMann said.

McMann said the suspect, Jones, was identified as a family member.
