Northview’s Malaki Haynes signed his letter of intent to play football at Hinds Community College (Miss.) today during a National Signing Day ceremony in the school’s auditorium.

Haynes signed his letter in front of teammates, family and friends.

Chiefs head football coach Wes Summerford said Haynes did a lot for the program, and thanked him for his efforts.

Summerford said playing college football is a unique opportunity.

“Malaki has a persevering attitude,” Summerford said.

Summerford said when Haynes came to NHS last August, he never wavered. His first action last season was in the Tate win.

“He always did things right,” Summerford said. “He’s a competitor at heart.”

Summerford noted Haynes’ one-handed interception grab late against Union County in the playoffs to seal the state championship berth, and a 70-yard reception to get things going against Blountstown.

Haynes thanked all for being at the ceremony.

“This opportunity was many years in the making,” Haynes said. “I want thank all of my coaches, past and present, my teammates, past and present. I couldn’t have done anything without them.”
