EA boys, girls win No. 2 track, field meet Wednesday

Escambia Academy’s boys and girls track and field teams won their respective meets in the No. 2 competition in Canoe on Wednesday.

EA’s boys racked up 249.2 points, while the girls scored 206.64 points.

In other notable accomplishments, Lakeside School’s Chloe Helms ran a new state record in the girls 1600-meter run. She finished the race first at 5 minutes, 32.57 seconds. Her record breaks a previous state record from 2011.

Helms said it felt good to set the new state record.

“I’ve been working really hard for it,” Helms said. “It really feels good to get this achievement.”

Helms said she felt confident about the race once she started to run during the second lap.

Helms said her next goal is to keep getting better at the running event each time she steps out on the track.

 

EA athletes who finished in the top six in events included:

  • Boys 100-meter dash – Shawton Riley, first place; and Cameron Ball, fifth place
  • Girls 100-meter hurdles – Tava Johnson, first place; Kimorah Goldsmith, fifth place
  • Boys 110-meter hurdles – Luke Bell, first place
  • Boys 200-meter dash – Riley, first place
  • Boys 300-meter hurdles – Bell, first place; and Yadarius McNeal, second place
  • Boys 400-meter run – Riley, first place; and Ball, fourth place
  • Girls 800-meter run – Alexis Strength, fourth place
  • Boys 1600-meter run – Danny Doerr, second place; and Eli Covington, third place
  • Girls 3200-meter run – Strength, fourth place
  • Boys 3200-meter run – Doerr, first place; and Covington, second place
  • Boys Discus throw – Zeke McElhaney – fifth place
  • Boys high jump – Bryan, sixth place
  • Girls high jump – Scottlia Williams and Paisly Donaldson, fourth place
  • Girls long jump – Johnson, third place
  • Boys Triple jump – Bell, fourth place
  • Boys 4×100-meter relay – first place
  • Girls 4×200-meter relay – fourth place
  • Boys 4×200-meter relay – third place
  • Girls 4×400-meter relay – third place
  • Girls 4×800-meter relay – second place
  • Boys 4×800-meter relay – first place

Middle school athletes competed on both teams during the meet as well.
