EA falls in 1A state quarterfinals

LUVERNE — Escambia Academy fell 13-1, 8-7 to Crenshaw Christian April 21 in the AISA Class 1A state quarterfinals on the road.

EA, the No. 3 seed, faced a scrappy CCA team that fought from behind late in the opening game. CCA then took a commanding lead during the third inning of the night cap, and held on for the run-rule win.

The Luverne school scored one run each in the first, second and fourth innings, and 10 runs in the third.

EA tacked on one run in the second.

Charlie Sasser went 2-for-3 to lead EA; and Jacob Lee went 1-for-3.

Crenshaw Christian’s Shawn Thomas went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; Coleman Owens went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs; Logan Owens went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run; and Haden Worthington went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs.

CCA 8, EA 7

Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh, Escambia Academy put together some needed hits and runs.

Sasser, Lee and Christian Crook hit RBI triples; Luke Bell and Carson Wilson had an RBI each to put the Cougars ahead 7-4 going into the bottom half of the frame.

Crenshaw’s Davis Menefree hit a walk-off single after the game was tied in the bottom of the seventh.
