8 ECHS athletes qualify for state track, field meet this weekend

Eight Escambia County track and field athletes qualified to compete in the Class 4A state meet this weekend after a strong showing at the Section 1 meet April 28-29 at McGill-Toolen.

Kaiden Arnold and James Whatley qualified in shot put; Jaylen Young qualified in the 110-meter hurdles; Elijah (EJ) Thomas qualified in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump events; and the 4×100-meter relay team qualified. The team consists of Mason Huggins, Jovon Brown, Cali McCants, Keeshan McKenzie and Lorenzo Arnold.

The state meet will be held at the City Municipal Track, 19026 County Rd. 6, West, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.

ECHS results from the sectional meet included by event:

  • 100-meter dash – Thomas, third place, 11.16 seconds
  • 200-meter dash – Thomas, second place, 22.60 seconds
  • 400-meter dash – Young, 18th place, 59.42 seconds
  • 110-meter hurdles – Young, second, 17.36 seconds
  • 300-meter hurdles – Anthony McCants, 11th place; 48.04 seconds; and Young, 12th place, 50.10 seconds
  • 4×100-meter relay – ECHS, second place, 44.72 seconds
  • Long jump – Thomas, first place, 23-1.5 meters; Cali McCants, fourth place, 19-6.5 meters; and Brown, ninth place, 18-8.5 meters
  • Discus – Whatley, 18th place, 90-9 meters; Arnold, 19th place, 89-2 meters; and Exavion Bradley, 22nd place, 78-4 meters
  • Javelin – Whatley, fourth place, 126-8 meters; Bradley, eighth place, 108-7 meters; and Anthony McCants, 16th place, 61-1 meters
  • Shot put – Arnold, first place, 45-1.25 meters; Whatley, fifth place, 40-3.25 meters; and Bradley, 12th place, 34-10.745 meters
