2023 National Day of Prayer held May 4 at ECHS gymnasium

The 2023 National Day of Prayer was held Thursday at Escambia County High School’s Cornell Torrence Gymnasium in Atmore.

Local pastors and city leaders participated in the annual event, which is held annual on the first Thursday of May. The day was designated by the U.S. Congress as a day where people are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation.

During the service, different prayers were said by local pastors for penance, first responders and different facets of the country, including government, church, military, family, education, media and business. The Praise Dancers of Holy Community Church performed.

First Assembly of God’s Royal Rangers escorted the United States flag for the pledge of allegiance.

To start the call to prayer, Willonette Hammond blew the shofar. Additionally, those present read Bible verses.

Prayers for the media, church, government, first responders, military and family, to name a few, were completed during the service.

Dietrich Bondurant performed two trumpet solos, and the closing prayer was by the Rev. Cleitis Walker Sr.

Allen Minchew served as the master of ceremonies. The ushers were the Yellow Hat Society and Elegant Ladies of Essence.
