Local firefighters were honored by the Escambia County Volunteer Fire Department Association during its July meeting Thursday night.

Atmore Fire Chief Ronald Peebles was awarded the career full time fire chief of the year, and Capt. Louis English was selected as the career firefighter of the year for 2023 by President Joey Moffet, according to a release.

Reps. Alan Baker and Matthew Hammett presented the awards during the program.

Nokomis Capt. Jerry Gehman received the John Martin Lifetime Achievement Award for 42 yards of fire service with the city of Atmore and Nokomis Fire Departments.
