Atmore man arrested on drug charges July 12

An Atmore man was arrested July 12 on drug charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Derek Staples, 35, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana I and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said the arrest stems after an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on Jack Springs Road in reference to a driver failing to have headlights on at approximately 8:10 p.m. July 12.

“During the officer’s interaction with the driver, later identified as Derek Staples, age 35, of Atmore, one of the officers observed a small plastic baggy in plain view with a green leafy substance,” McMann said. “The officers conducted a probable cause search and recovered several dozen grams of marijuana and a digital scale.”

Staples was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
