The Highway 21 resurfacing project will begin on Aug. 25, according to city of Atmore officials.

During the Atmore City Council meeting Aug. 12, City Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn provided the governing body and public an update on the project.

Vaughn said the project is an Alabama Department of Transportation project. He added that H.O. Weaver is the contractor performing the work.

“The project will begin at the Alabama-Florida line and goes north to Sunset Drive, which is 3.6 miles,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn all work is scheduled to occur during night hours from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. He added that there is presently no daytime work.

Vaughn said the work will occur seven days a week, plus weekends.

“There is no detour of traffic,” he said. “Single lane closure and half-road closures are anticipated.”
Vaughn said he believes the project will last a month.

“They will begin at the railroad tracks intersection, and work northward toward Sunset Drive,” he said. “Afterward, the project will begin again at the railroad tracks and proceed southward to the Florida-Alabama state line.”

Regarding parking along the 100 and 200 blocks of North Main Street, Vaughn said the community needs to be aware not to park in parallel spaces along that route during the evening hours during the week of Aug. 25.

“A similar exercise will occur on South Main Street later in the project,” he said.

Vaughn said cones will be placed to block parking spaces along the 100-200 blocks on Main Street no earlier than 5 p.m., and removed no later than 7 a.m.

Vaughn said schedules are subject to change without notice.
