Northview’s Dane King scored three touchdowns and the Chiefs’ defense came to play in a 26-7 victory over Destin, Fla. tonight in the season opener at Tommy Weaver Stadium.
King ran scoring runs from 3 and 1 yard in the opening quarter; and from 1 yard in the third quarter. The quarterback’s scoring runs were set up by a good reception from Nate Duffy, good runs by Moses Delarosa and a Destin facemask and unsportsmanlike call. Delarosa scored the final touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run with 32.3 seconds left in the fourth.
NHS head football coach Wes Summerford said the game went well, and there are some things the team has to clean up.
“Every time we got a chance to hit a stride, there was a penalty, or a turnover and the defense missed some assignments,” Summerford said. “There are some things that we need to clean up, and the kids know that. That was a good confidence win to get the ball rolling.”
Defensively, defensive back Sam Reid grabbed an interception late in the first quarter; senior Colby Pugh intercepted a pass with 3:25 left in the second quarter; Duffy intercepted a pass with 9:03 left in the third; and the Chiefs recovered a fumble with 6:20 left in the third.
The Sharks scored their only touchdown on a 22-yard pass with 6:52 left in the second quarter.
The Chiefs visit Opp next week.
In Thursday night action, Flomaton beat Clarke County 23-15; and T.R. Miller topped Reeltown 28-7.
