A Walnut Hill, Fla. man was arrested Aug. 22 on possession of drug charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Chad Smith, 46, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
McMann said at approximately 5:40 a.m. on the day of the arrest, APD officers responded to the Fairfield Inn and Suites in reference to a suspicious vehicle near the entrance to the lobby.
McMann added that Smith, the driver, had been there for an extended period of time honking his horn.
“When the officer arrived on the scene he observed Smith asleep on the driver side of the vehicle,” McMann said. “The officer attempted multiple times to wake Smith. Smith finally woke up and began speaking incoherently and indicated he thought he was in another state. The officer opened the door and detected a strong (odor) of marijuana inside the vehicle. Smith was removed from the vehicle in order for the officer to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle.”
McMann added that during the search of the vehicle, the officers discovered approximately 3 grams of a mixture of fentanyl and methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and two syringes with an unknown type of residue.
Smith was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
