The Atmore City Council adopted two resolutions for police vehicles and an annual subscription to aid in department policies and procedures during its regular meeting on Monday.
The city adopted resolution 2024-17, authorizing to purchase five police vehicles off of the state bid list. According to officials, the vehicles are being purchased for $46,867 each from Stivers Ford Lincoln of Montgomery.
Additionally, the city adopted resolution 2024-18, authorizing to purchase an annual subscription to Lexipol.
Chief Chuck Brooks said every police department in the country has standard operations and policies to give them guidance.
Brooks said Lexipol serves two purposes – one for training and another for maintaining policies and procedures within the police department.
Brooks said Lexipol is a good tool because the department will know any updates that have been made through the Alabama Supreme Court.
“We get notified, and they’ll adjust our policies to make sure we’re always staying in compliance on our policies,” Brooks said.
Brooks said a good thing about Lexipol is it allows officers to look at the policies and procedures on their phone. Additionally, officers have to take a test every month on the policies, the chief said.
Brooks said training is quite important for the officers.
“The more they’re training, the better equipped they’ll be to handle citizen complaints,” he said. “The officers have to train six hours on this.”
Brooks said Lexipol is a good tool, and the changes made to both policies and procedures occur instantly.
“They keep old and new policy together and when someone comes with a complaint, we’ll have that and can tell the court this is what we’re doing now,” he said.
In other business, the city:
• approved the execution of Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) No. 3-01-0113-024-2024 at the Atmore Municipal Airport for $144,000. This is phase 2 of the construction of the six hangars; and,
• approved the execution of Airport Improvement Program (AIP) Grant No. 3-01-0113-023-2024 at the airport for $150,000. This is also phase 2 of the construction of the six hangars.
