Escambia County School System officials announced today that over the weekend, a potential school threat was placed on Flomaton High School.
Superintendent Dr. Michele Collier said in a letter that the system received notice of a potential school threat.
“Please know that we are taking this threat very seriously,” Collier wrote. “Since receiving this information, the Escambia county Sheriff’s Office, its investigators and our school officials have been working diligently to identify those involved and determine the validity of this threat.”
Collier said after investigating, no credible threat was found. She said in an email that it appears the threat was a rumor heard and spread.
She added that sheriff’s office investigators interviewed several students who reported hearing the threat.
“No evidence has been found, but in light of two recent school shootings, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure our students are safe,” Collier said.
Collier said in the letter that in taking the matter seriously, the system will utilize means to help protect school communities.
“However, we take these matters seriously and want to protect our school communities,” she said. “As part of our response to this situation, we will utilize our metal detectors more thoroughly and frequently. Local law enforcement will be visible and monitor our schools. These enhanced safety measures are in place to protect everyone on campus and provide peace of mind to our students, staff and community.”
Collier encouraged parents and guardians to talk with their children regarding this matter.
“We also want to remind you that our doors are always open for any questions or further information you may need,” she said. “Please feel free to reach out to the school administration. Your input and feedback are not only welcome, but also crucial to us.”
