The Atmore City Council approved a proposal for repairs to the old YMCA building on Pensacola Avenue during its regular meeting on Monday.

City Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn said the YMCA building has deteriorated, yielding broken windows and a leaky roof.

Vaughn said the proposal is to prevent further damage by covering the windows and placing a tarp on the roof.

“This is just to help stop the bleeding,” he said.

The cost of the project is $7,835, and Wade Kaufmann Construction is the contractor.

In other business, the council:

• adopted resolution 2024-19 for grass and weed nuisance. Vaughn said the resolution covers 22 properties that have high grass and weeds. The approval allows the city to place notices on the property, in the newspaper and to contact the owners by formal letter, Vaughn said.

Vaughn said if the owners don’t address the nuisances by Oct. 15, there will be a second resolution for the city to abate the nuisance;

• approved the reappointment of Rob Faircloth to the utility board;

• approved the reappointment of Katie Brantley to the library board; and,

• approved designating an area for handicap parking at Heritage Park.

Additionally, City Councilwoman Eunice Johnson spoke about the annual Patterson Street Fun Day, which will be held Sat., Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Johnson said the annual event is for all ages, and includes fun, food, free giveaways and more.
