FHS outscores Tigers 20-0 with more than 9 minutes to go

Flomaton outscored Monroe County 20-0 with more than 7 minutes left as the Hurricanes beat the Tigers 33-6 in region action on homecoming Friday night.

The scoring spree late in the game was precipitated by a third-down-and-20 conversion from quarterback Harper Harrison to Cooper Turner with 9 minutes left in the contest. Turner grabbed the reception off of a ricochet deep in Tigers territory.

From there, Zy Martin scored on a 2-yard rush with 7:14 left; and Zay French added touchdown runs of 6 and 1 yard.

The Hurricanes squibbed each kick off, and recovered the kick twice, leading to the Martin and French scores.

FHS head football coach Doug Vickery said even with the win, the team wasn’t where it needed to be. The Hurricanes led 13-6 when the third-down conversion occurred.

“Last week’s game against Jay (Fla.) was such a rivalry game, and sometimes with high school kids, it’s hard to get them to bounce back and understand the importance of the next game,” Vickery said. “We had a pretty good week of practice. We did seem a little lethargic during the week, but we tried to be intense for most of the days.

“At the end of the day, a win is a win, and they (MCHS) have a lot of athletes,” he said. “Sometimes teams have so many athletes that it’s hard to bust one on them. I thought we made some really good plays.”

With the victory, Flomaton improves to 4-3 overall, and 1-3 in Class 3A, Region 1. This is the Hurricanes’ first region victory of the season.

FHS is off next week, and then visits Hillcrest-Evergreen on Oct. 18.

Vickery said the team has set a standard, and it didn’t live up to it Friday.

“That’s what makes it hard as you can win the game and still feel disappointed,” he said. “We should’ve played better, but I think that’s (knowing to play better) makes good teams.”

Late in the game, Harrison suffered a deep thigh bruise, but with some rest, should be good to go in two weeks, Vickery said.

During pre-game festivities, Harrison’s girlfriend, Abbie White, was crowned homecoming queen.
