After being handcuffed, the Atmore man managed to escape, but was captured a short time later
An Atmore man was arrested Oct. 6 on possession, tampering and escape charges, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Emmanuel Johnson, 34, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, escape III, possession of marijuana II and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.
McMann said the arrest stemmed after an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Jack Springs Road at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Oct. 6.
The traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle no having taillights, and having an expired license plate, McMann said.
“The officer approached the vehicle and detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” McMann said. “The officer requested the driver to exit the vehicle to conduct a probable cause (search) of the vehicle. During the interaction between the driver and the officer, the passenger was observed throwing something from the vehicle. The officer then had the passenger step out of the vehicle.”
McMann said the passenger was later identified as Johnson.
“The officer looked in the area where the object was thrown and found a handgun,” he said. “The handgun had been reported as stolen through another agency. The officer discovered a small amount of a crystal-like substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, and a small amount of marijuana in Johnson’s clothing.”
McMann said Johnson was then placed under arrest, and managed to run away from the officers after he was handcuffed.
“Johnson was taken into custody a short time later,” McMann said. “Upon checking Johnson’s criminal history, the officer found that Johnson has been designated as a person forbidden to possess a firearm.”
Johnson was the transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
