A swarm of Escambia County High School alumni, Escambia County School System employees and Atmore community stakeholders celebrated the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the school’s field house today.

The ribbon cutting marks more than a year after a groundbreaking was held to start the construction phase of the project.

According to Atmore Advance archives, the Escambia County Board of Education awarded a bid for renovations of the field house to TripTek Construction LLC for $2,693,700. The project included the renovation of the field house, and an addition to the weight room.

Blue Devils head football coach Vincent Harris said the team is grateful to the school board for approving the project, and for creating a new space for the team to develop.

“We’re grateful, and thank you so much,” Harris said.

District 7 Board Member Coleman Wallace said the new field house is a break from the past.

“We’re standing in the future,” Wallace said.

TripTek Construction LLC Contractor Rusty Miller said the company is proud of this project.

Miller said most of his employees are alumni of ECHS, and it was a pleasure making the project a reality.

Miller added that PH&J Architects served as a great partner for the project.

Upon entering the field house, a mural with old photos of football games, teams and coaches can be seen.

Alumni stood and recalled memories of the past as current football players delighted in what will come in the future.

Superintendent Dr. Michele Collier said the football team will move into the new field house today, prior to its homecoming game tonight against Satsuma.
