Blue Devils fall 14-13 on homecoming to Satsuma Oct. 18

Escambia County fell 14-13 to Satsuma on homecoming night in Atmore on Friday.
Satsuma’s Braxton Byrd scored two rushing touchdowns from 1 yard out each during the victory.
“They played hard,” ECHS head football coach Vincent Harris said. “We’ve got to get better.”
When asked what happened during the game, Harris said he was at a loss for words.
“We played hard,” he said. “I’m proud of the effort, and we’ve just got to be better.”
Byrd scored from 1 yard out each with 8:48 left in the first quarter, and with 7:57 left in the fourth.
The Blue Devils didn’t go away, or back down during the contest.
ECHS quarterback Jamarion Robinson connected with Cali McCants on a 10-yard touchdown with 9:57 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-all with the extra point attempt.
The game was tied at 7-all at halftime.
The Blue Devils gained an advantage after an interception by Bull Bolar. The turnover led to a 1-yard touchdown rush with 6:34 left in the third from Tai Henderson. The point after try was blocked, and ECHS led 13-7.
The Gators, who drove the ball well offensively, continued their streak into the fourth quarter.
Byrd scored his second touchdown on Satsuma’s first drive of the fourth.
The Gators recovered an onside kick with less than 8 minutes left.
With the loss, the Blue Devils fall to 2-7 overall, and 0-6 in Class 4A, Region 1. ECHS closes out its season next Fri., Oct. 25 at home against Hillcrest-Evergreen.
During the homecoming ceremony at halftime, Ziyonah Moye and McCants were crowned the 2024 ECHS queen and king, respectively.
In other area action, Flomaton fell to Hillcrest-Evergreen 46-18.
