An Atmore woman turned herself into the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton on an identity theft charge, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Michelle Darby, 52, was charged with identity theft, and turned herself in on Oct. 24.
McMann said on Sept. 22, 2023, an APD investigator launched an investigation in reference to an identity theft complaint.
“The victim checked his credit history, and noticed several financial accounts he did not apply for,” McMann said. “The victim suspected his former girlfriend, Michelle Darby, age 52, of Atmore, was (allegedly) involved.”
McMann said the investigator sent subpoenas to several financial entities requesting information on several accounts, which took a great amount of time to receive the records.
“Upon examining the records, the investigator obtained a search warrant for Darby’s residence,” he said. “Upon executing the search warrant, the investigator seized documents and electronic devices.”
McMann said after examining the data on the devices, the seized documents and the financial records, the investigator was able to determine Darby had allegedly committed identity theft.
