Flomaton and Northview battled all night, but the Hurricanes scored late to win 6-0 Thursday night in the season finale in Bratt, Fla.

The game was spotless through the first three quarters. During the fourth, Flomaton’s Zay French rushed 9 yards with 5 minutes left. A rare point after touchdown was missed.

Just over 4 minutes later, the Chiefs got some life after recovering a fumble with 42.7 seconds left, and tried for a Hail Mary play.

In the end, both teams played with good effort and through perseverance.

“Tough game,” NHS head football coach Wes Summerford said. “I’m so proud of our kids. I thought we had a chance in there, and fought hard. They gave it all their effort, and we needed that one big play. And I don’t think that big play ever happened. But, we played an outstanding game. That was one of the best games I’ve seen in a couple of months. I’m proud of our kids for that.”

Summerford added that he’s proud of the school as well.

“You can’t talk enough how great things are,” he said. “Even though it was a disappointing season, the way they responded at the end was exactly what I came to Northview for, and what I expect of Northview.”

With the loss, the Chiefs ended their season 2-8. NHS lost its final six games.

Throughout the game, the Chiefs’ defense, especially their defensive front, controlled the line of scrimmage.

“It’s a war in there,” Summerford said. “It’s football in a phone booth. I thought all night our defense battled. They outweigh us by 200 pounds up front. Those guys did a good job up front.”

Offensively, Summerford said the only thing lacking was the one big play.

“We’ve got to find explosive plays all season,” he said. “That’s something tonight I don’t think we did that a lot. We took care of the football, but we just got to build more explosive plays.”

Flomaton head football coach Doug Vickery said the boys battled and fought all night.

“That was actually a well officiated game,” Vickery said. “We just self destructed. That was probably the worst game we’ve played all year.”

Vickery said the fumble at the end zone, and the missed field goals didn’t help.

“Probably the stat line of time of possession will favor us big,” he said. “I told them before the game, sometimes you don’t know. It’s like Auburn-Alabama, you just don’t know (with rivalry games).”

Vickery added that Northview’s a well-coached team, and is proud of the players.

FHS ended its season 6-4.
