Escambia County boys basketball coach Rafael Adams described this year’s team as one filled with dogs who are strong minded and want to play defense.
Adams, who is in his first year as the Blue Devils coach, came to Atmore by way of Flomaton, where he served as the girls coach last season. Prior to his stop at FHS, he had a stint at a high school in Georgia, and played college ball at Coastal Alabama Community College, then Faulkner State.
Adams said this year’s team is comprised of some six seniors.
Leading the bunch will be Bull Bolar and Cali McCants.
“Cleo (Bolar) is probably going to be one of the best scorers in the whole state of Alabama,” Adams said. “Everybody calls him Bull. He deserves it. I told him as long as he keeps his grades up, he’s probably going to go D-1.”
Adams said McCants is the team’s captain.
“He’s not gonna scream at you, and get you out of position,” the coach said. “He’s going to motivate his teammates.”
This season, the Blue Devils will play in Class 4A, Area 2 with Jackson and W.S. Neal.
Adams said the key to playing the area games is to not fall into playing your opponent’s game.
“We’ve got to make free throws, and that’s going to be big or us,” he said. “We’re a team full of guards, so we’ve got to make those.”
Adams said he likes this team because everybody is together.
“We’ve got the same goal,” Adams said. “I’m pretty much excited about this team. They’re so motivated to get out there and play.”
Escambia County begins its season this Fri., Nov. 8 at Monroe County.
