Set in a small town in 1938, “Smoke on the Mountain” tells the story of the Sanders Family Singers as they take the stage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, hoping to lift spirits and maybe even win a few souls. But with Pastor Oglethorpe (Ollie Jaye) trying to keep the service on track and the Sanders family’s mix of endearing chaos and personal confessions, what starts as a simple church performance turns into a hilarious and heartwarming evening that will have you laughing, clapping and maybe even humming along.

Directed by Jerry Janes, this show promises a delightful mix of comedy, drama and music, with songs like “I’ll Fly Away” and “Rock of Ages” performed live. Meet the Sanders family: Burl (Damon Jernigan), the steadfast father; Vera (Carla Jernigan), his fiercely faithful wife; and their children, June (Monica Booker), Denise (Emmylou Norris), Dennis (Simon Bush), and the quiet Stanley (Ayden Roynon). Together, they’ll take you on a journey through song, stories, and a little bit of soul-searching. The musical atmosphere is enriched by GECA’s talented musicians, featuring Amy McCrory on piano, Damon Jernigan and Bryan Fayard on guitar, and Ascher Hampton on banjo.

The Strand Theatre is located at 116 S. Main St., Atmore.

Tickets are $15, and are available at www.gecarts.org.
