A new radio station has hit the airwaves in Atmore.
The new radio station, 93.5 WGYJ-FM, launched on Mon., Nov. 4.
Vice President of Sales JonChristian Guyton said the radio station is a part of Journey Network. Journey Network just celebrated its 17th birthday, and is on Mediacom TV channel 6/1-106.
Guyton said over the past year, the network felt led to dive deeper into the Atmore community.
“And so it just worked out for the station, and the network to be able to come into getting into radio and really being able to play a part in the community activity there,” Guyton said. “We just purchased WGYJ, or acquired it, rather.
“We’re excited to be able to give the community the music that they want to hear,” he added. “And really it’s going to be the music that you know, the playlist of your life.”
Guyton said for the Christmas season, the radio station is playing holiday-themed music 24 hours a day, seven days a week all the way to Christmas into the new year.
“After that, we’ll switch over to our other format, which we’re excited to be able to get people involved in as well,” he said.
Guyton said the radio station’s aim is to be active in the community, covering local events.
“Whatever’s happening, be that from sports to local events,” he said. “And, you know, being active, being the voice of the community, and giving people what they want to hear, and not even just, you know, the top charts, but giving them the music they love and the coverage that they need.
“We believe very much so strongly in supporting local, and that the voices of the community are important, and so that is what we’re interested in bringing to life again,” he added.
Guyton said an app will be released to allow people to keep up with the radio station and make call ins.
Guyton said Monday through Friday, the radio station will feature a morning show, which includes local news, weather and obituaries.
