Atmore man arrested Dec. 12 on possession, drug trafficking charges

An Atmore man was arrested Dec. 12 on possession and drug trafficking charges, according to officials.

Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Derek Staples, 36, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said at approximately 12:45 p.m. on the day of the arrest, APD officers responded to a disturbance involving a firearm in the 3300 block of Woods Road.

“While en route to the call, the officers were updated that one of the people involved in the disturbance had left the scene riding an ATV,” McMann said. “The caller also provided a description of the person.”

McMann said an officer observed the ATV on Woods Road, conducted a traffic stop and contacted the operator later identified as Staples.

“The officer was given consent to search the ATV, and discovered several dozen grams of synthetic cannabis (spice), a digital scale and numerous plastic baggies used to package narcotics,” he said.

Staples was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
