An Atmore man was arrested Dec. 18 on multiple charges, including assault and reckless driving, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Dallas Owens, 18, was arrested and charged with assault II, resisting arrest, reckless driving and attempting to elude a police officer.
McMann said on the day of the arrest at approximately 4:10 p.m., an APD officer observed a four-wheeler being driving on Sunset Drive as the officer approached from the opposite direction.
“The officer turned his marked police vehicle around to conduct a traffic stop in reference to the frequent complaints from citizens in reference to four-wheelers being driven recklessly in the roadways,” McMann said.
McMann said the operator of the four-wheeler, identified as Owens, allegedly accelerated at a high rate of speed through traffic upon the officer activating emergency blue lights.
“The officer decided not to pursue Owens due to the inherent danger of pursuing a four-wheeler,” he said. “A few minutes later, additional officers observed Owens stopped off the roadway next to Brushy Creek. As the officers approached Owens on foot, they began giving him verbal commands. Owens ignored them and got back onto the four-wheeler and drove toward one of the officers. The four-wheeler struck the officer.”
McMann said Owens was removed from the four-wheeler and taken into custody. The officer received minor injuries, he added.
Owens was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
