The 18th annual Rosa Parks Breakfast will be held next Sat., Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. at Greater Mount Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.

Browder

The breakfast, which is sponsored by the Yellow Hats Society, is held each year to celebrate the contribution of Parks and other prominent African Americans in history. Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her role in the Montgomery bus boycott.

On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake’s order to relinquish her seat to a white passenger in the colored section after the whites-only section was filled.

Parks’ prominence in the community and her willingness to become a controversial figure inspired the black community to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year, the first major direct action campaign of the post war civil rights movement.

Breakfast Coordinator Lillie Johnson anyone age 16 and over are welcome to attend the breakfast, which is free.

This year’s keynote speaker is the Rev. Jamal E. Browder Sr.

Browder is a native of Boston, Mass.

Browder graduated from the Boston Public School System. He also graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance from Alabama State University. Browder is also named among the Who’s Who Honor Society. He is a graduate of Selma University with a master’s degree in pastoral theology and leadership.

During his tenure at Alabama State University, he served under the late Rev. Rufus L. Tolbert at New Center Missionary Baptist Church, Selma, as choir director, men’s ministry leader and as a Sunday school teacher.

Browder joined Pastor Edward J. Nettles and the Freewill Missionary Baptist Church. While there, he served in the music ministry, Christian education department and in the men’s ministry as a coach of the “Enough is Enough Campaign.”

Browder confessed his calling and received his ministerial license on Oct. 20, 2006 and was ordained Oct. 5, 2008.
