Between 6-8 inches of snowfall fell in the Atmore and Bratt, Fla. areas on Jan. 21, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologist Michael Mugrage said the highest totals the service came across in Atmore was 6.5 inches.
He added that near the state line in Bratt there were reports of 8 inches of storm total snowfall.
“While we don’t have any official observing sites there to compare historically, this is certainly a very anomalous total for them,” Mugrage said. “We also did update our Pensacola storm total snowfall to be 8.9 inches.”
According to reports, the highest snowfall total recorded was 10.5 inches in Rayne, La., a modern-day record (though the area may have received 20 inches in 1895). New Orleans received its biggest snowfall based on modern records; and both Pensacola and Mobile shattered 130-year records, according to 1440’s website.
States of emergency were declared in Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi as the region battles dangerous travel conditions and power outages.
