Two Atmore men were arrested Jan. 28 on possession of drug charges, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Keith Brown, 51, was arrested and charged with giving false name to a law enforcement officer, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Melvin Knight, 65, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
McMann said at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on Brown Street in reference to a vehicle displaying improper lighting. The officer then made contact with the vehicle’s occupants, Brown and Knight.
“During the officers interaction with Brown and Knight, the officers noted there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and conducted a probable cause search,” McMann said. “While checking their identifications, the officers discovered that Knight had an active misdemeanor warrant through the APD. Brown provided a false identification to the officers believing he had active warrant for his arrest. Upon checking for warrants, the officers discovered Brown had no outstanding arrest warrants.”
McMann said during the search of the vehicle, the officers discovered a small amount of crack cocaine and items used to ingest narcotics.
McMann said both were then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
