The Escambia County Republican Executive Committee held its regular meeting on Feb. 17 at Atmore City Hall.

Committee members talked about upcoming events, old and new business and heard from two guest speakers, including Escambia County Sav-A-Life Executive Director Linda Smith and Alabama Court of Civil Appeals Judge Matt Fridy.

Smith spoke about the work at the women’s resource center, adding that there are many babies alive today through the center’s ministry.

Smith told a story on a woman who got pregnant and was strongly considering an abortion.

Smith said they immediately got the client in the ultrasound program, and after a first visit, she waivered in getting an abortion. A discussion of adoption was had, she added.

However, the client stayed on the abortion track, Smith said, adding that she scheduled a late-term abortion appointment in Illinois after some time.

In the end, Smith said the client chose life, and the little baby turned 2 weeks old on Tuesday.

Fridy spoke about his career as a lawyer, legislator and now as a judge.

Fridy served in the state legislature from 2014-2020. His credits included writing and passing the pro-life amendment to the Alabama Constitution.

Additionally, his work in the legislature included drafting rules of impeachment and a campus free speech bill.

Then, he was elected to the court of civil appeals, where the group hears about 1,000 matters per year, making it the top five busiest in the country.
