An Atmore man was arrested March 3 on possession of drug charges, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Montay Harris, 35, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.
McMann said at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Monday, an APD officer conducted a traffic stop in reference to the driver failing to wear his seat belt. The officer then made contact with the driver, later identified as Harris.
“During the officer’s interaction with Harris, the officer noticed suspicious behavior and requested a K-9 officer respond to the scene,” McMann said. “Once on scene, the K-9 alerted on the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle the officers discovered several dozen grams of synthetic marijuana (spice), several grams of ecstasy and small plastic baggies that are commonly used to package narcotics.”
McMann added that while the officers were searching the vehicle, Harris fled on foot from the scene, but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.
Harris was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
