Balancing academics, extracurricular activities and personal passions is a challenge for many high school students.
Yet, for Northview High School senior Kate Stinson, it’s a way of life — one she has mastered with dedication and a passion for excellence.
From earning top academic honors to excelling in National Junior R.O.T.C. program and varsity cross country, Stinson’s journey is a testament to how hard work and focus can lead to success without sacrificing the joy of personal pursuits.
A natural leader and high achiever, Stinson has built an impressive résumé throughout her high school career. She has received the Naval Science 1 Highest Academic Average Award in NJROTC, the 2023 Jumni Ross Memorial Award in cross country, and the English 3 Honors Exemplary Performance 2024 Award, among many others.
But for Stinson, these accolades are more than just symbols of achievement—they represent years of dedication and the invaluable lessons she has gained through her school’s NJROTC program.
For Stinson, NJROTC has been a defining part of her high school experience. The program has refined her natural leadership skills and provided her with a sense of purpose.
“I’m in NJROTC, where I serve as the Cadet Commanding Officer,” Stinson said. “It’s my favorite part of school because it’s where I spend most of my time.”
Despite her demanding schedule, Stinson has never let her academic and extracurricular commitments overshadow her personal interests. An adventurer at heart, she finds peace in nature.
“I love being outside—gardening, hiking, birdwatching, astronomy, and trail running,” she said.
Beyond her love for the outdoors, Stinson is also a creative spirit. She enjoys painting, playing the guitar, and reading—hobbies that allow her to unwind and express herself beyond the structured world of academic and athletic achievement.
Though she has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for herself, Stinson credits much of her success to the people who have guided her along the way.
“My heroes are my NJROTC instructors, Chief Simpkins and Commander Ahalt,” she said. “I have to include them both because I see them equally in the ways they have supported me.”
Stinson’s determination, leadership, and ability to balance so many responsibilities have set her apart as a role model at Northview High. She is living proof that with the right mindset, success doesn’t have to come at the cost of happiness.
