For Al and Karen Ferguson, seeing as much as possible of the Americas is priority No. 1.
The Fergusons, a retired couple from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, have been traveling in Canada and the United States since last year. They stopped in Atmore on March 2 to get some needed items at Walmart.
Al said they’re touring the United States at the moment in a 2006 Land Rover Defender.
“We brought this from Scotland, where we live to Canada,” Al said. “We drove across Canada, and went down through the states. Now, we’re headed back up (north).”
Al said since they arrived in Canada last year, they’ve traveled 21,000 miles.
“In the U.S., we’ve kind of went from North Dakota, south across to Arizona and now we’re going back,” he said. “We touched Florida, and are headed up through Alabama.”
The couple then meandered through Alabama, touched on Montgomery and skirted around Birmingham. Their next big stop was Nashville, Tenn., and from there, they’ll drive to Niagara Falls.
Al said since they’ve been on this journey, they’ve seen a lot of things along the way.
“In different places, the people are quite different,” he said. “We found in the south, in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, the people have been very friendly. We’ve enjoyed being here. I can sit in a car park, and have different conversations with people.”
Al said the Defender is self-converted, and includes a camper, kitchen and sink.
“We’re autonomous,” he said. “We call this autonomous travel.”
Al said they hope to spend a couple of years traveling here between the U.S. and Canada.
