Lightning strike determined as cause of fire at First Presbyterian Church of Atmore

A fire destroyed the First Presbyterian Church of Atmore late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The Alabama Fire Marshals Service was called in to investigate the fire. An official investigated the fire on Sunday morning.

Alabama Department of Insurance – Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office Public Information Officer Jennifer Bowen said Monday their investigator believes the fire was a result of a lightning strike.

Multiple area fire departments responded to the scene of the blaze, which took more than three hours to extinguish.

Along with the Atmore Fire Department, fire departments from Little Rock, Barnett Crossroads, Escambia County, Fla., Walnut Hill, Fla., Poarch and Nokomis, to name a few, responded for mutual aid to the fire.

Throughout the battled, the AFD utilized its ladder truck, spraying between 1,200-1,500 gallons per minute to quench the flames.
