Doug Vickery was named the head football coach of the Northview Chiefs earlier this afternoon.
Vickery coached at Flomaton, a nearby rival for the Chiefs, for some 19 years, compiling a 130-82 record, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society’s website.
“I’m super excited to go to Northview, and be the head football coach,” Vickery said. “I’ve always had my eye on it. With me always being in Flomaton, and we’ve played them several years, I’ve always known Northview to be a good program. The kids play hard, they’ve got great support and facilities.”
Vickery said he felt like NHS would be a good place to coach, especially given his recent retirement from the state of Alabama.
“This is a great opportunity for my family to be able to go across the state line, and continue the blessings I’m getting from God and to continue to do what I love, which is coach football,” he said.
Vickery thanked Principal Mike Sherrill for giving him the opportunity to be the head coach for the Chiefs, adding that former head coach Wes Summerford has already laid a good foundation.
Vickery said he’s looking forward to getting down there, and working with the players.
“I’m excited about the coaching staff already in place,” he said. “I know a lot of those guys down there, and I know they’re high quality coaches from playing against them in the past at Flomaton.”
