An Atmore man was arrested April 3 on assault, possession of drugs and resisting arrest charges, according to officials.
Atmore Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Miller McCaster, 37, was arrested and charged with assault II, possession of marijuana I, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and obstructing government operations.
McMann said on Thursday at approximately 1:15 p.m., an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on Crow Street and recognized the driver, McCaster, had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for reckless endangerment through the police department.
“The officer approached the vehicle and requested McCaster exit the vehicle due to the arrest warrant,” McMann said. “McCaster refused to comply after being requested several times to exit the vehicle. The officer reached through the open window to unlock it to take McCaster into custody when McCaster raised the window trapping the officer’s arm in the vehicle.”
McMann said the officer said he felt he was in danger if McCaster decided to drive away with his arm in the vehicle, and he decided to break the window.
“McCaster was removed from the vehicle, and after a brief struggle was placed under arrest,” he said. “The officer sustained cuts to his arm from the glass breaking, and was treated and released from Atmore Community Hospital.”
McMann said when when officers searched the vehicle, they discovered a small amount of marijuana. A criminal history check revealed that McCaster has two prior convictions for possession of marijuana II, he added.
McCaster was then transported to the Escambia County, Ala. Detention Center.
“If McCaster would have complied, he would have been transported to the Atmore Municipal Jail, where he would have been processed, pay a bond of less than $50, given a court date and released,” McMann added.
