A Peterman man was arrested April 3 on possession of drug and chemical endangerment of a child charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Jarvarous Lett, 28, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana I, possession of drug paraphernalia and chemical endangerment of a child due to other unknown substances in the vehicle in close proximity to the child that will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science lab for testing.
McMann said at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, APD officers responded to Popeyes in reference to the driver of a vehicle passed out behind the wheel in the drive-thru.
“The caller provided the dispatcher a description of the vehicle,” McMann said. “The first responding officer observed the vehicle stopped in the road behind McDonalds next door to Popeyes. The officer contacted the driver, Lett.”
McMann said during the interaction with Lett, the officer noted that he appeared to be under the influence and the odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle.
“The officer was further concerned that a 5 month old infant was in the vehicle,” he said. “The officer requested Lett step out of the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests, but did not display any cues of impairment.”
McMann said officers then conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, and discovered several dozen grams of marijuana, several hydrocodone pills and items that are used to package narcotics.
Lett was transported to the Escambia County, Ala. Detention Center, and officers were able to contact a family member to pick up the child.
