A former corrections officer trainee was arrested April 4 on contraband and drug charges, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Public Information Manager Kelly Betts said in a release that former trainee Tommy Middleton was arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband into Fountain Correctional Facility.
Betts said the contraband was uncovered during a search conducted by ADOC K-9 officers.
“Middleton was found in possession of approximately 212 grams of marijuana and two cell phones,” Betts said. “The investigation was a joint effort involving the ADOC K-9, narcotics and law enforcement services divisions.”
Betts said Middleton was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center and charged with possession of marijuana I, promoting prison contraband II, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental operations
Betts said the ADOC investigation is ongoing and further charges may be pending.
Betts added that less than 24 hours before Middleton’s arrest, a joint contraband interdiction operation was conducted at Fountain by the K-9, intelligence and communications services and men’s services divisions and the corrections emergency response team.
The operations resulted in the removal of contraband, she said.
