A clear blue sky and comfortable temperatures provided the backdrop for a benefit for Atmore Police Capt. Chris Corbitt in Perdido on April 12.

The benefit was held to raise money for Corbitt’s medical expenses. Corbitt is battling cancer.

Benefit Coordinator Danyell Hicks said the all-day event went great.

“It was pretty smooth,” Hicks said. “It was probably the most laid back benefit that I’ve ever done.”
Hicks said they typically hold two benefits a year.

The benefit on Saturday included a turkey shoot, corn hole tournament, a draw down, and live and silent auctions.

Hicks said local vendors and individuals donated every item.

She said the benefit raised more than $20,000.

Hicks said she’s been coordinating benefits for 30 years, and there’s always a worry whether people are doing to show up or not.

“We had to move this benefit out because we had other circumstances come up,” Hicks said. “We’re glad we did because the weekend we had it scheduled, we had horrible weather. This weekend was full of nice weather. It was a great turnout.”

Hicks added that a lot of people who attended the benefit didn’t know Corbitt, but showed up for support.
