The Atmore City Council approved a color run on April 19, and the Mental Health annual Walk and Resource Fair during its regular meeting on Monday.
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce is holding the Bunny Hop Color Run at Heritage Park and the Atmore Community Splash Pad.
The council also approved the need to close one lane of traffic on the block around the splash pad.
During the chamber’s Easter in the Park event, which lasts from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., there will be photos with the Easter Bunny, games, treats and more.
In other business, the city:
• approved a proclamation declaring May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and to hold the annual Walk and Resource Fair for Mental Health Awareness Monday on May 17 at 10 a.m.
Walkers will walk from Boxcar Willie, and will climax at Heritage Park.
“Mental health is not just important, it’s essential,” Marlo Young told city councilmembers. “Despite recent progress and how we approach mental wellness, far too many Americans still face barriers to accessing high quality, comprehensive care.”
Young said one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, yet only 47 percent of those adults have received treatment within the last year. She added that one in six youth in the U.S. have a mental health condition, and only half of them receive care.
Additionally, an Atmore citizen expressed his concern about the burnt and dilapidated houses around town. He asked if the city could do something to burn them down.
Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vaughn said one can’t just burn a house down anymore, adding there are environmental implications and the cost to tear a house down would leave the property worthless, unless someone were purchase the property.
Economic and Grants Writer Chris Walker said he’s applied for grants, and there are other grants coming up that one can get for dilapidated structures, and residential structure removal.
“It’s a competitive grant, and it’s just a point of whether or not we get awarded the grant,” Walker said.
