As the sun set on Escambia County High School’s Herbert Barnes Stadium on May 19, the Class of 2025 had cause to celebrate during commencement exercises at the Atmore school.
Eighty-one seniors received diplomas during the ceremony, which is a milestone for the graduates.
Salutatorian Chloe Dawson said the graduation is a day that’s a celebration of an incredible journey.
“Words can’t express what I can say about this school,” Dawson said. “I thank God because without His perseverance, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Dawson thanked her family and support system.
“I’m going to carry parts of you all with me,” she said. “The strength you molded in me will be with me for a lifetime.”
Dawson said God brought all of her friends and family into her life for a reason.
“To the class of 2025, we did it,” she said. “We made it through. We went through many challenges, changes and events. No one ever lost his or her spirit.
“Today is a special day we truly deserve,” she said. “This is just the beginning.”
Valedictorian Ashley Parra-Cerritos congratulated her classmates for making it across the finish line.
She joined her class in the sixth grade.
“You can say there were some teachers who pushed us,” Parra-Cerritos said. “Thank you, class of 2025 for continuing to do the unpredictable.”
Parra-Cerritos thanked her friends and spoke of family. She thanked her mom, adding that she never failed to make her be the best she can.
“I stand here because of all the sacrifices you made for me,” Parra-Cerritos said about her mom.
Principal Dr. LaTonya Gill gave a message to the class, and then the presentation of diplomas was held.
Gill said some encouraging words to the soon-to-be graduates.
