“This moment is more than a celebration of achievement. It’s a testimony of perseverance, grace and integrity that brought us here.”
That’s what Northview High School Salutatorian Jamison Gilman said May 28 during commencement exercises at the Pensacola Bay Center.
One-hundred-and-seven seniors walked across the stage to receive their diplomas as family, friends and loved ones cheered.
Gilman said this moment belongs to God, who allowed her to stand before her classmates this afternoon.
“I started high school focused on academics,” she said. “I believed success was awarded in numbers, awards and trophies. While those things still mater, I realized they’re a small part of the story.”
Gilman thanked the teachers who let them grow and be who they are. She added that the teachers taught them how to lead and treat others with respect.
Gilman thanked all of the families for their support.
“The end of high school isn’t really an ending,” she said. “It’s a beginning. My prayer is that we each be that light, whether we’re heading to college, the work force or the military.”
Gilman quoted John 16:33, which says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)
“As we face the unknown, we can walk boldly, not because we have the answers, but because we walk with the One who does,” Gilman said.
Valedictorian Colton Criswell thanked his family, teachers, school staff and all who gave him support over the years. He especially thanked his mother, Crystal, who passed away in 2017.
“She is the reason why I’m here before you all,” Criswell said. “As she is my motivation, I encourage you to find your motivation.”
Criswell quoted from one of his favorite movies, “Kung Fu Panda.”
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift,” he said. “It’s what we do with these gifts that’s important. Be thankful for the gifts God has given to you because you never know.”
Criswell encouraged his classmates to thank God, and think how far they’ve come as they cross the stage.
Before presenting diplomas, Principal Mike Sherrill spoke about the class of 2025’s academic, athletic and extra curricular achievements.
