Two months ago, the face of the Cutie Pies Bakery on 115 N. Main St. changed when Michelle Smith became the owner and changed the name to Michelle’s Baking Co. & Café.

Smith, an Atmore native, took the reins of the bakery on April 1 and has been working to give Atmore a good mix of baked goods and lunches.

Smith said business has been strong since she opened Michelle’s two months ago.

“Things have gone very well for the first two months,” Smith said. “We have been busy consistently. The biggest thing is still getting the word out that we are here. We have a lot of people stop in and say they heard about us from someone, but they didn’t know we were here until then. There are a lot of customers that do know we are here though, and they keep coming back.”

One thing that Smith takes pride in is the fact that all of her items are homemade.

Everything on the menu from red velvet cake to chicken salad is made at Michelle’s by Smith and the help she has employed.

At lunch, there are daily specials along with a soup of the day and sometimes even a dessert of the day.

Smith said that customers have easily found their favorites for lunch and dessert.

“People love the club and the chicken salad,” Smith said. “They love the club because it’s huge and loaded down. There are a lot of reasons I hear that they like the chicken salad, and everyone tries to figure what it has in it. Key lime cake has become a favorite of our customers since we first put it out two weeks ago. We can’t keep it on the shelves.”

As for orders, Michelle’s offers everything from birthday cakes to catering.

Smith said that she will do anything that a customer wants.

“We can do any kind of cakes whether it’s for a birthday or a wedding,” Smith said. “If they want us to do it a certain way they can bring us a picture and we will fix it how they want it.”

When it comes to catering, the crew at Michelle’s is ready to compete with other businesses and work it how a customer wants.

Smith said that pricing is competitive and menus can be done by her or the client.

“Our catering is reasonably prices,” Smith said. “We can make anything they want here. We can create the menu or they can create their own. We’ll do whatever the customer wants.”

Future plans at Michelle’s Baking Co. & Café include additional seating and the possibility of breakfast.

Smith said she is going to add more tables for customers, and added that a morning menu could come soon.

“I have everything to make breakfast sandwiches, so that could happen in the near future,” Smith said. “I want to add more tables, so we can accommodate more customers on busy days. All of it is a good possibility.”

Michelle’s Baking Co. & Café is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.
