EA beats Sparta

The Cougars of Canoe picked up another win on Tuesday night as they slipped past the Sparta Warriors 48-44 in Canoe.

The Cougars were in a tight contest throughout the match up never building a lead of more than four points at the end of each quarter.
Escambia Academy opened the game with a 19-15 run in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, EA allowed the Warriors to take the advantage in the period with Sparta outscoring the Cougars 12-9. Despite losing in the quarter, the Cougars led 28-37 at halftime.

Followingthe break, the Cougars  picked up the tempo and stayed on top of the Warriors for the rest of the game.

A 12-9 run in the third quarter helped the Cougars put their lead back to four points as they rolled into the fourth quarter leading 40-36.

Escambia Academy held off comeback attempts by Sparta in the fourth quarter as both teams scored eight points to give the Cougars a 48-44 victory.

Darren McGhee and Jaylen Henry led the Cougars in the contest scoring 10 points apiece. McGhee also had six rebounds, while Henry recorded four assists and three rebounds.

Cougars Robert Whatley and Blake Quimby each scored nine points in the win with Whatley pulling down nine rebounds and Quimby recording eight.

Jordan Sasser chipped in five points for EA in the win, while pulling down 10 rebounds and passing out six assists.

Brandon Goddard finished the game with three points and Jacob Dean posted two points. Goddard also had four rebounds and Dean had two.

The Cougars next game will be Monday at home against the Fort Dale Academy Eagles. Games begin at 4 p.m.

Darrren McGhee and Jordan Sasser paved the way for the Escambia Academy Cougars victory over the Jackson Academy Eagles with both posting double-doubles.

McGhee finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Sasser had 10 points and 10 rebounds in Escambia Academy’s 62-49 win.

In the first quarter, the Cougars fell behind the Eagles as Jackson outscored the home team 17-15.

The Cougars bounced back in the second quarter to outshooting the Eagles to take the lead with a 15-12 run. At halftime, EA was on top 30-29.

After halftime, the Cougars continued to run with the momentum beating the Eagles in the final two quarters.

Escambia Academy built on their slim one-point lead by outscoring the Eagles 16-8 in the third quarter to move into the final quarter leading by nine.

Leading 46-37, the Cougars again took the advantage in the fourth quarter putting up 16 more points and holding the Eagles to 12 to win 62-49.

Cougar Jaylen Henry turned in a strong night for EA scoring 14 points and passing out eight assists in the win.

Brandon Goddard posted  nine points for the Cougars to go along with eight rebounds, while Garrett Kirk finished with four points and two rebounds.

In Escambia Academy junior varsity action, the Cougars of Canoe picked up a seven-point win over the Sparta Academy Warriors on Tuesday night.

The Cougars fought a tight battle with the Warriors in the first half as the teams went into the break deadlocked at 14.

After halftime, it was all Cougars as EA went on an 11-0 run in the third quarter and closed the game in the fourth quarter to win 35-28.

Garrett Kirk led EA with a double-double posting 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Scott Brantley finished with eight points, fire rebounds and three steals in the win.

The Cougars next game will be Monday at home against the Fort Dale Academy Eagles. Games begin at 4 p.m.
