Chase ends with arrests

A high-speed chase Saturday near McCullough Road ended with two men in custody after the vehicle being pursued by authorities collided with a tree.

According to information released by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department, Justin Johnson, 21, and Jerry Timothy, 21 both of Jack Springs Road in Atmore, were arrested following the accident and an ensuing foot search involving the Fountain Correctional Facility K-9 team.

According to the release, deputies on routine patrol attempted to stop the vehicle, which increased its speed once emergency lights were activated. The driver of the vehicle then sped down a dead end road, striking a tree.

A short time later, the release reads, a second suspect arrived at the scene on foot and, as officers were taking him into custody, the vehicle’s driver escaped on foot leading to a lengthy manhunt.

The first suspect was later located and arrested approximately seven miles from the original scene.

Both men were transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton. Johnson was charged with hindering prosecution in the second degree and obstruction of a governmental operation. He was released on $4,000 bond. Timothy was charged with attempting to elude, criminal mischief in the third degree, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and escape in the third degree. He remains in custody on $10,000 bond.
