The Alabama Department of Transportation brought the heavy machinery to repave South Main Street.

Some have wondered what in the world is going on with jackhammers, steamrollers, and all other forms of road construction taking over South Main Street. It turns out it is part of a repaving project headed by the Alabama Department of Transportation.

According to Atmore Public Safety Director Glenn Carlee, Highway 21 happened to be the designated area selected some months ago by the Alabama Department of Transportation to be repaved as part of a regular paid project that rotates through different roads over the years.

Highway 21 is a state-maintained road. The project is expected to stretch from around McRae Street through Howard Street.
